West Virginia, one of the Appalachian states, is bounded on the north by Pennsylvania and Ohio; on the east by Maryland and Virginia; on the south by Virginia and Kentucky; and on the west by Ohio and Kentucky, from which it is separated in part by the Ohio River. It lies between about 37º 12′ and 40º 40′ north latitude, and between 77º 47′ and 82º 40′ west longitude. The state measures about 250 miles from north to south and about 130 miles from east to west. It contains approximately 24,230 square miles, or 15,507,200 acres.
