Kentucky, one of the south central United States, is bounded on the north by Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio, from which it is separated by the Ohio River; on the east by West Virginia and Virginia; on the south by Tennessee; and on the west by Missouri, from which it is separated in part by the Mississippi River. It lies between about 36º 30′ and 39º 9′ north latitude, and between 81º 58′ and 89º 34′ west longitude. The state measures about 140 miles from north to south and about 380 miles from east to west. It contains approximately 40,408 square miles, or 25,861,120 acres.
