Virginia, one of the southern Atlantic states, is bounded on the north by Maryland and the District of Columbia, from which it is separated in part by the Potomac River; on the east by the Atlantic Ocean; on the south by North Carolina and Tennessee; and on the west by Kentucky and West Virginia. It lies between about 36º 30′ and 39º 27′ north latitude, and between 75º 15′ and 83º 41′ west longitude. The state measures about 200 miles from north to south and about 430 miles from east to west. It contains approximately 42,774 square miles, or 27,375,000 acres.
