North Carolina, one of the southern Atlantic states, is bounded on the north by Virginia; on the east by the Atlantic Ocean; on the south by South Carolina and Georgia; and on the west by Tennessee. It lies between about 33º 50′ and 36º 33′ north latitude, and between 75º 27′ and 84º 19′ west longitude. The state measures about 500 miles from east to west and about 180 miles from north to south. It contains approximately 53,819 square miles, or 34,444,160 acres.
