Illinois, one of the north central United States, is bounded on the north by Wisconsin; on the east by Indiana; on the south by Kentucky, from which it is separated by the Ohio River; and on the west by Missouri and Iowa, from which it is separated in part by the Mississippi River. It lies between about 36º 58′ and 42º 30′ north latitude, and between 87º 30′ and 91º 31′ west longitude. The state measures about 385 miles from north to south and about 218 miles from east to west. It contains approximately 57,914 square miles, or 37,064,960 acres.
