New Jersey, one of the middle Atlantic states, is bounded on the north and northeast by New York; on the east by the Atlantic Ocean; on the southwest by Delaware Bay; and on the west by Pennsylvania, from which it is separated in part by the Delaware River. It lies between about 38º 56′ and 41º 21′ north latitude, and between 73º 54′ and 75º 33′ west longitude. The state measures about 170 miles from north to south and about 70 miles from east to west. It contains approximately 8,722 square miles, or 5,582,080 acres.
