Family of Jackson Smith and Martha E. Thompson

Jackson Smith was born 22 Sep 1830 and married Martha E. Thompson on 29 Aug 1852, in Dallas, Texas. When the Smith family first came to Oklahoma they had lived near Marlow, but removed to Kiowa County when their daughter, Allie, received her land in the 1901 drawing. Jackson died at their home at Green Valley, Dec. 7, 1902 and was buried near the corner of the home place. An iron fence was placed around the grave site, to keep the cattle off the grave. His wife Martha, died Apr. 20, 1907, and was buried next to her husband. Jackson Smith served in the Civil War and was a teamster.

When the family sold the farm after their parents death, they gave the corner of the farm to the community to be used for Green Valley Cemetery. Since that time, many of the Smith descendants have been buried there, as well as many others from the community.
