Hawaii, one of the Pacific states and the only island state in the Union, is located in the central Pacific Ocean about 2,400 miles southwest of California. It is bounded entirely by the Pacific Ocean and consists of eight principal islands—Hawaii, Maui, Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Niihau, and Kahoolawe—together with numerous smaller islands and islets. The islands lie between about 18º 55′ and 22º 15′ north latitude, and between 154º 48′ and 160º 30′ west longitude. The state measures about 1,523 miles from the southeastern tip of Hawaii to the northwesternmost islet of the chain, but the main inhabited islands extend roughly 400 miles. It contains approximately 10,932 square miles, or 6,995,000 acres.
This state project is part of the much larger American History & Genealogy Project or better known by the abbreviation of AHGP. It has been in existence online since 2000 and over the years has been spread out across the web. These pages are an attempt to consolidate it under one website of the larger project.
