Vermont, one of the New England states, is bounded on the north by Canada (Quebec); on the east by New Hampshire, from which it is separated in part by the Connecticut River; on the south by Massachusetts; and on the west by New York, from which it is separated in part by Lake Champlain. It lies between about 42º 44′ and 45º north latitude, and between 71º 28′ and 73º 26′ west longitude. The state measures about 160 miles from north to south and about 90 miles from east to west. It contains approximately 9,615 square miles, or 6,153,600 acres.
