Louisiana, one of the southern United States, is bounded on the north by Arkansas; on the east by Mississippi, from which it is separated in part by the Mississippi River; on the south by the Gulf of Mexico; and on the west by Texas. It lies between about 28º 55′ and 33º 1′ north latitude, and between 88º 49′ and 94º 3′ west longitude. The state measures about 130 miles from north to south and about 380 miles from east to west. It contains approximately 52,378 square miles, or 33,522,000 acres.
