State of Oregon - Tillamook
County
Tillamook County Bounded north by Clatsop, east by
Washington, Yamhill, and Polk, south by Benton, and west
by the Pacific Ocean. Area, 2,000 square miles. Assessed
valuation of property for 1874, $154,720. Population,
600.
County seat, Tillamook. There are no large towns, but
the post offices and settlements are Garibaldi,
Hoquatton, Lincoln, Netarts, Nestocton and Trask. The
county occupies a narrow strip of land bordering the
coast, extending back to the summit of the Coast Range,
and from the Nahalem River on the north to the mouth of
the Yaquina on the south, a length of about 70 miles; is
but sparsely populated, and its resources are
undeveloped.
The greater portion is covered with the most magnificent
forests of spruce, the trees growing to enormous size,
often from five to eight feet in diameter, and from one
to two hundred feet before reaching a limb, furnishing
an excellent material for the planks and spars of ships,
or any other purpose. Small valleys and grazing hills
exist, and the noblest game, such as elk, deer, and
bear, abound.
Several streams flow from the mountain to the sea, and
Tillamook Bay, reaching some 10 miles inland, affords a
good harbor. Coal and iron are known to exist, but the
mines are undeveloped. Fishing banks and oyster beds are
found along the coast; the streams are filled with
salmon and other varieties of the finny tribe.
Roads are few, and the county awaits the coming
population to make available its natural wealth. The
opportunity for the profitable use of capital,
particularly m the lumber trade and businesses
associated with it, is unsurpassed.
