State of Oregon - Pendleton,
Umatilla County
Pendleton, Umatilla County, PO and
County seat, is a young and growing business town in the
valley of the Umatilla River, on the great stage road
from the head of navigation on the Columbia to the
Grande Ronde and to Boise City, and the mining districts
of Idaho. The proposed Portland, Dalles and Kelton
Railroad, connecting the Columbia with the Central
Pacific, is expected to pass through Pendleton, giving
it quite a central character. Good roads already lead to
the various surrounding towns, bringing it considerable
trade. The large valleys of Birch Creek, the Hautomah,
and of Wild Horse Creek center to the Umatilla in the
vicinity of Pendleton, constituting a large agricultural
area, mostly open for pre-emption and awaiting
development. It is also hoped that the Indian
Reservation which borders the town will soon be removed,
and the vast tract of fertile and beautiful country now
occupied as a waste by the savages, will be thrown open
to settlers. The substantial public buildings, and
numerous hotels and stores, give evidence of permanence
and prosperity. One newspaper, the Oregon Tribune, is
published weekly.
