State of Oregon - Forest Grove
Washington County
Forest Grove, Washington County, PO and incorporated
town, six miles west of Hillsboro, is on the line of the
Oregon Central Railroad, twenty-five miles from
Portland. This is in the midst of the region known as
the Tualatin Plains, an elevated plateau of the richest
soil, and shaded by a fine growth of native trees. From
slight elevations an extended and very interesting view
is obtained, embracing the broad and fertile valley of
the Willamette, while in the distant east rises the
grand Cascade Range with the snow-capped peaks of Mounts
Hood, St. Helens and Jefferson, distinctly marked
against the eastern sky. Here is the seat of the Pacific
University and Tualatin Academy, one of the oldest
institutions of learning in Oregon, the Academy having
received its charter in 1849, the new charter, including
both titles, being granted in 1853-4. It is a
well-endowed and prosperous institution, having a
library of 5,000 volumes. Three churches are organized,
and a good public school is maintained. The town
contains a population of about 800, and is growing. No
saloons for selling liquor are allowed.
