Canon City, Grant County, PO and County
seat, is a town of considerable importance, on John
Day's River, in the midst of a rich mining section, and
good agricultural lands in the vicinity. The town lies
at the western base of the Blue Mountains, and is
connected by a fine stage road with the Columbia, at the
Dalles, 180 miles northwest. The surrounding country is
rich in placer and gold-bearing quartz veins, which have
already yielded some $10,000,000 of the precious metals
since the discovery in 1861, and promise, upon proper
development, a large supply for an indefinite period.
Schools and churches are established and
well-maintained, Indicating a good state of society.
