British Columbia Nanaimo
Vancouver District
Nanaimo, Vancouver District, P
O, is a beautiful little seaport town about 80 miles
north of Victoria, and contains a population of about
500 inhabitants.
This is the only place in the
colony wherein coal has been profitably mined. The
Vancouver Coal Mining Company's" works are the only
source from which the town derives its support. Large
quantities of this coal are annually exported to San
Francisco and elsewhere, at which place a ready market
is always obtainable.
The extent of land existing in
the neighborhood adapted for agricultural purposes is
very limited. A weekly line of steamers plies between it
and Victoria. One newspaper, the Nanaimo Free Press, is
published semiweekly.
