Nebraska was
organized as a territory in 1854 and was admitted as a state in
1867. It has a land area of 77,000 square miles, while its
extreme breadth is 415 miles and length 205 miles. The surface
is a rolling prairie and the soil exceedingly fertile in the
eastern part of the State, while the western part is well
adapted to grazing. The State is being rapidly and thickly
populated by a liberal, progressive and thrifty people.

Since the issuance of our preceding
edition there has been the usual number of newspaper changes in
this and other States mentioned in this work. The several
industries throughout the State have largely increased, and in
every branch and direction show unusual prosperity.
We give a brief description in the
following pages of the several counties, with a tabulated list
of the newspapers published in each.
