A large funeral cortege followed the remains of Stephen Crosby to its last resting place in Crosby Chapel churchyard in this county, Sunday afternoon, Oct. 5th, at two o'clock.
Stephen Crosby, one of the most widely known citzens of the county died suddenly at his home six miles South of Baxley in the South Midway community late Saturday afternoon. His death came instantaneously as he stooped to start a fire in the living room of his residence, a short while after reached home from a business trip to Baxley.
Mr. Crosby had been a sufferer of Bright's disease several years, his sudden death however, came as a shock to his family and friends throughout the county.
Interment took place in the family burial plot in the Crosby Chapel churchyard, Rev. J.A. Godfrey, pastor officiating.
C.W. Giddens with Morris and Swain was in charge of funeral and burial arrangements.
The pallbearers were C.C. Padgett, H.L. Padgett, D.P. Miles, G.A Ray of Baxley, V.E. Miles and S.V. Brown of Baxley.
Mr. Crosby was born in Appling County in 1853. He married in 1874 to Miss Maria Spell who with three sons and one daughter survive him, John, C.W. and W.E. Crosby, Mrs. Rosco Williams, one daughter, Mrs. Harley Brown proceeded him to the grave. His parents were Stephen Crosby, Sr., Mrs. Mary Branch Crosby who came to Appling County from South Carolina. His brothers were Jim, Silas, Judge Abram and John Crosby. He was a farmer, owning the plantation where he made his home since 1874. He leaves an estate valued at several thousand dollars.
The deceased was a member of the Methodist Church. He was widely known and highly resepcted. He had a large family connection and a wide circle of friends who admired him for his loyalty and steadfastness, and in his passing, the county loses a substantial citizen.
