Cecil A. Crosby

Cecil A. Crosby, 81, passed away Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004, at his residence, under the care of Hospice of South Georgia, surrounded by his devoted family.
Cecil was born January 29, 1923, in Graham, Ga., the son of Clifton A. Crosby and Cora Dyal Crosby. He was predeceased by his sister Jeanette Crosby Pinholster.
Cecil grew up in the Altamaha Community and shared many fond memories of fishing with his Dad, attending Oak View Baptist Church and swimming in the "Ole Hazlip Swimming Hole."
As a young man, Cecil farmed, worked at the Paper Mill and Shipyard in Brunswick, Ga., prior to entering the Army at 21. He served in World War II, landing at Iwo Jima, and spent his four years of service in the Pacific Theater. Upon his return from war, he was employed at McDonald's Grocery in Baxley and worked there until 1948 when he moved his family to Jacksonville, FL.
He raised his family in Jacksonville and retired from Southern Bell after 34 years of service. He was affectionately known as "Bing" among his coworkers.
Upon retirement, Cecil and Dovie retired to Baxley where Cecil had many happy years tending his garden, enjoying family and spending time at his mountain home at "Brookside." He cherished the many friends that he made in the North Ga. Mts.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 62 years, Dovie; son, Calvin Crosby and daughter-in-law, Sylvia Crosby of Baxley; daughter, Bernice Howard and son-in-law, Donnie Howard of Baxley; daughter, Cynthia Lomax and son-in-law, Dwight Lomax of Cornelia, Ga.; grandchildren, Shelley Stafford of Jacksonville, FL., Aaron Crosby of Jacksonville and Kyle Sewell of Athens, Ga. His very special Great Grands, Kiersten, Logan, and Teagan Stafford of Jacksonville, FL.; sister, Vivian Lewis and brother-in-law B.K. Lewis of Jacksonville, FL.
The family will greet friends and family at Swain's Funeral Home in Baxley, Ga., from 6:00p.m. to 8:00p.m. on Monday, Nov. 8, 2004. Services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 9, at 1:00p.m. in the Chapel at Swain's Funeral Home, officiated by Rev. Darrell Quinn. Graveside services will follow at Omega Cemetery, Baxley, Ga.
Pall bears will be B.K. Lewis, Tom Butler, Morgan Sellers, Felix Rentz, Warren Rentz and Ruben Holcomb. Honorary pallbears will be David Rentz, Rodney Herndon, Delmus Hale, Mr. and Mrs. Roland Rooks, Mrs. Ida Williams, Mrs. Bettye Waters and the Mount Vernon Senior Adult Sunday School Classes of Al Garner and Carolynm McCall. Donations in the memory of Cecil may be made to Hospice of South Georgia, Inc., 134 W. Parker St., Baxley, Ga. 31515.
Arrangements are under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
